Cutting Edge of Transplantation
February 23-25, 2023
Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of healthcare professionals (physicians, surgeons, pharmacists, nurses, and others) and researchers working in the field of transplantation.
Educational Objectives
The following overarching objectives and more specific goals have been identified for this meeting. Having participated in this meeting, attendees will be able to:
- Define the access challenge in organ transplantation.
- Recognize the current barriers at each step in the transplant process for patients requiring transplant care.
- Identify innovative strategies to mitigate disparities and expand patient access to transplant care.
- Discuss recommended approaches to decrease disparities at one’s transplant center.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
For many people with end-stage organ failure, an organ transplant becomes their only effective treatment option and remains the gold standard for end stage organ disease. Access to organ transplantation is a complex and challenging process through which a patient needs to progress through multiple sequential steps from the diagnosis of end stage organ disease to organ transplantation. This multiple step process includes but is not limited to 1) timely recognition and mitigation of the chronic disease state by the practicing clinician, 2) timely referral to a transplant center when there is progression to end organ disease to realize the benefit of transplantation , 2) in person evaluation at a transplant center, 3) the need for laboratory and radiographic testing for medical clearance, 4) discussion and approval at transplant selection meetings, 6) insurance approval for transplant, 7) placement as an active candidate on the transplant waiting list, 8) follow up appointments and medical testing to remain active on the wait list, 9) having suitable access to available deceased donor organs, and 10) undergoing successful organ transplant. A recent report from the National Academy of Sciences Engineering and Medicine entitled 3 “Realizing the Promise of Equity in the Organ Transplantation System” identified barriers to equitable patient access in the current organ transplant system. The report made recommendations to address disparities in the current system and identify strategies for improvement. CEoT 2023 will focus on identifying the barriers that exist for patients on this complex journey to organ transplantation and more importantly focuses on providing innovative strategies and potential solutions to overcome these barriers in an effort to optimize access for all solid organ transplant candidates. We will examine each step in the process as defined above and these steps will serve as the backbone for discussion during each of the sessions during the meeting. Our sessions will also include active participation from transplant recipients both in show casing their own transplantation journey as well as panel discussants so that all in the audience can learn from experts in the field as well as the patient experience moving along the transplant process.
